Here at The Hewitt Fertility Centre, we are passionate about giving our patients every bit of help we can. That devotion to care goes beyond simply treating the effects of low fertility or inability to conceive. We understand that, while undergoing any kind of treatment, both your mental and your physical state is of the utmost importance.

You may feel that counselling is unnecessary and may not suited to you, but it’s important to note that the counselling we offer goes beyond one-on-one sessions and covers a wide range of therapeutic interventions which can help you deal with negative thoughts and emotions you may be having.

Counselling can help you regain control over your experience of treatment by becoming more aware of, and addressing your emotional and psychological needs as they change throughout your fertility journey.

Numerous reports state that mental wellbeing and high levels of stress can have a direct effect on your fertility. In fact, a recent study carried out by the University of Ohio found that heightened stress levels can decrease the chance of conception by up to 12%. Although stress is a natural response to having to go through fertility treatment, it’s important to adopt strategies to minimise its effect.

We have prepared the following video to give you an insight into how counselling, and many other support services, may help you whilst undergoing treatment.

For most of us, the primary cause of anxiety is not external but internal. Events that occur around us and the actions of others can trigger feelings of stress, nervousness and anxiety; but it is how we deal with those feelings internally that really makes the difference.

Endlessly analysing things you have said or done, as well as things that have happened around you can leave you feeling mentally exhausted and lacking in peace of mind. Toxic thoughts can tend to circle in the mind - "What if I can never have children?" "Is this my fault?”. These are very common questions people can become obsessed with when dealing with fertility issues.

Here at The Hewitt Fertility Centre - as well as throughout the broader medical community - Mindfulness is seen as a very effective solution to these thoughts and feelings. Mindfulness is described as ‘the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us’.

This is helpful in removing negative thoughts and relieving anxiety whilst dealing with fertility issues as well as any other negative events in life.

Mindfulness therapies can involve meditation, yoga, counselling and many other methods. However, it is something that - if wished to be effective - you will need to maintain throughout your day.

As well as the information provided in the video above, our counselling team have put together a brief list of books that you may find helpful. These are award winning publications endorsed by counsellors internationally as well as within the NHS. You can also book in for a one-to-one mindfulness sessions with one of our counselling team.
